London 2012: Eguavoen drops Lukman, Ehiosun, others

Published by Tribune on Fri, 18 Nov 2011

DREAM Team V skipper, Haruna Lukman has been dropped from the list of players who will represent Nigeria at the maiden CAF U-23 Championship in Morocco. Also dropped are regulars Ekhigo Ehiosun, deputy captain Odion Ighalo and Italy-based Nnamdi Oduamadi. In spite of assurances from directors of clubs parading these players, Dream Team's head coach, Austin Eguavoen regretted that the teams reneged on their pledge to release the players because the CAF U-23 Championship was not on FIFA calendar.Eguavoen and Chaiman, Technical sub-committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chris Green had toured clubs of Nigerian players needed for the Championship meant to pick four of African representatives for the male football event of London 2012. The eight-nation events starts next Saturday.'Everyone has continued to ask what happened to the likes of Lukman Haruna, Ekigho Ehiosun, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Odion Igalo and others. The truth is that I got the green light from their clubs and a host of others but surprisingly in the eleventh hour some of the clubs changed their minds; noting that the tournament is not in a FIFA free window' Eguavoen explained.'But in any case I have confidence in the squad we are taking to Morocco' he affirmed.Eguavoen on Wednesday named 21 players for the CAF U-23 tournament, putting five others on standby. The list parades eleven home-based, nine foreign-based and one unattached.Goal Keepers: Dele Ajiboye, Olufemi Thomas and Theophilus Afelokhai.Defenders: Kingsley Udoh, Markson Ojobo, Usman Amoda, Emmanuel Anyanwu, Edet Ibok, Suswam Terna, .Midfielders: Osas Okoro, Ayo Saka, Odah Onoriode, Obiora Nwankwo, Nosa Igiebor, Lawal Raheem.Attackers: Jude Aneke, Kayode Olarenwaju, Stephen Worgu, Babatunde Micheal, Uchechi Daniel, Gbolahan Salami. Those on standby are Semiu Liadi, Papa Idris, Olabiyi Rasheed, Olaitan Otubanjo and Atu Irumekhai.
