Reward nations unsung heroes

Published by The Nation on Fri, 08 Jan 2021

By Frank Ikpefan, Abuja An Abuja-based legal practitioner, Kayode Ajulo has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reward unsung heroes who had contributed to the growth and development of the country.Ajulo, who spoke to reporters in Abuja said the doctrine of reward and punishment was an indispensable tool for social engineering and nation-building, stressing that some have contributed in the areas of security, economy and industry. He said: The world over, societies have recognised the cardinal role in the public recognition of individual demonstration of discipline, hard work, honesty, excellence and patriotism plays. This is in galvanising the entire community towards a renewed determination to dedicate themselves as individuals, and as a group, to sacrificing their today in order to build a better society tomorrow. He urged Mr President to look into the issue of recognition and reward of citizens whose efforts and contributions to the rebuilding of Nigeria and the restoration of her glory were manifestly undeniable.According to him, the National Honours Act was promulgated in 1964 to recognise the patriotic efforts and the gallantry of Nigerians who have made exceptional contributions to the corporate existence of the country. He stated that more emphasis had been placed on the National Productivity Awards and Nigerian National Merit Awards since President Buhari assumed office in 2015.He added that scarce mention had been made of the conferment of National Honours in accordance with our law and national custom apart from the posthumous conferment of the GCFR honour on Chief Moshood Abiola.Others honoured alongside Abiola, the assumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election are Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, (GCON) and the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi who was awarded GCON title posthumously.Ajulo said it was necessary to remind President Buhari of the role the Honour Awards play in assuring the nations heroes that Nigeria recognises their efforts and contributions. He said it would also encourage citizens to embrace patriotism and commitment to excellence in their respective endeavours.
