SSANU urges fairness in LASU VC appointment process

By Damola Kola-DareChairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University branch, Mr. Saheed Oseni has urged the Lagos State Government to ensure transparency and fairness in selecting candidates for the post of vice chancellor.The current vice chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun leaves office on January 11.The Visitor to the university, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday ordered the cancellation of the ongoing process for the appointment of the ninth Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University.He called for a fresh process which will end in 45 days.The Governor also directed the outgoing VC ,Prof. Fagbohun to convene an emergency Senate meeting to appoint one of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, who is not a candidate in the cancelled selection process as Acting Vice-Chancellor from Monday, January 11, 2021.Read Also:Unionists react to Sanwo-Olus cancellation of LASU VC appointment processHowever, in a chat with The Nation, Oseni said the cancellation of the appointment process should not be to favour certain groups, insisting that it should be in the best interest of the state and institution.He said: As a union, we want to enjoin the government to ensure the process for the selection of a vice chancellor is transparent. It should not be seen to favour certain groups. The government should be fair and just. And the whole process should be in the best interest of the university and the state.He also urged government to pick a candidate that would be accepted by the university community noting that the last five years has been peaceful for the institution. Therefore, government should ensure continuity to maintain stability.The government should appoint someone that would be accepted by the university community. The last five years has been peaceful,hence,we want someone who would continue the trend for stability and progress, he said.
