NEF: service chiefs appointment wont dramatically end insecurity

By Gbenga Omokhunu, AbujaNorthern Elders Forum (NEF) on Wednesday said the appointment of the new Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs would not to automatically end the security challenges in the country.We warn the nation not be misled into thinking that these changes will dramatically change the nations fortunes in its fight against multiple security threats, NEF said in a statement by its Director, Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.The group which also expressed concern over what it called existential threats to the whole nation called on Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, take security matters seriously.Read Also: Generals: how new service chiefs can excelPresident Buhari must reduce his distance from defence and security matters, and hold the service chiefs and senior commanders accountable for successes and failures, the forum said.It also advised the President to summon a meeting of governors and security chiefs to de-escalate the tension especially in the Southwest.The statement reads in part: Events unfolding in the Southwest, particularly inflammatory comments and threats by groups and individuals represent existential threats to the whole nation.All Nigerians must eschew the temptation to tamper with sensitive matters in the pursuit of narrow goals.The forum repeats its call on President Buhari to summon a meeting of governors, the leadership of security and intelligence services and other Nigerians with capacities to advise and assist in de-escalating tensions in the Southwest.
