Induction for ambassadors-designate, spouses next month

By Bola Olajuwon and Vincent Ikuomola, AbujaThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced dates for the induction course for career and non-career ambassadors-designate and their spouses.The induction, according to a statement by the ministrys Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, is scheduled from February 8 to 10.The statement indicated that the ministry has designed an induction course to prepare the envoys for effective representation in their respective missions and countries of accreditation.The statement reads: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that the induction course for career and non-career ambassadors-designate and their spouses has been scheduled for 8th10th February, 2021.Read Also: EXCLUSIVE: Full list of Ambassadorial postingFollowing the approval of the posting of career and non-career ambassadors-designate by President Muhammadu Buhari, the ministry has designed an induction course tailored to prepare the appointed envoys for effective representation in their respective missions and countries of accreditation.The aim of the programme is to acquaint the ambassadors-designate with the proper understanding of their roles and duties in the implementation of Nigerias foreign policy agenda, in line with the priorities of Federal Government as well as promote and protect the national interests of Nigeria.The induction course is preparatory to the final departure to their various missions, subject to the receipt of Agrment from the prospective host countries.An agreemo is a memorandum from one nation to another agreeing to the appointment of an ambassador or envoy.The statement did not indicate whether the induction will be in-person or virtual owing to COVID-19 pandemic. It also did not state the venue of the induction.A diplomatic expert said: In this era of COVID-19 and with flights not operating in some European countries, how will the envoys there get to Nigeria for the induction' So many issues need to be sorted out. Peoples lives should not be risked. The pandemic should guide whatever is being done.
