Borno revokes N6.7b road contract

Our ReporterThe Borno State government has revoked an N6.7 billion Township Road projects awarded to Messrs. Hajaig Construction Nigeria Limited.Briefing reporters on the development in Maiduguri on Thursday, the state Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Yerima Saleh said the decision to revoke the contract was taken during an Executive Council meeting presided by Governor Babagana Zulum.Saleh said the 20km road contract was awarded in 2012, but the contractor only did seven kilometres.Read Also; Zulum inaugurates N6b Maiduguri-Bama roadWe have exhausted all clauses in the agreement on the Bulumkutu Road and drainage, and Ramat Polytechnic Junction to Wulari roads.Government has done all at its best after paying a huge amount to the contractor. Unfortunately, the progress is nothing to write home about, Saleh said. He further explained that the work from Ramat Polytechnic Junction to Wulari Ward was now to be done by direct labour at the cost of N230 million, while the contractor was to make a refund of N659.3 million.This is a signal from government to all contractors that non-performance will no longer be tolerated, Saleh warned.
