Urhobo union: Restructuring will halt insecurity

Published by The Nation on Mon, 15 Feb 2021

By Emmanuel Oladesu, Deputy EditorThe Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has said devolution of powers will halt the growing insecurity in the country. The organisation expressed worry about the level of insecurity across the 36 states of the federation.Noting that many security outfits were springing up in states and communities to deal with their peculiar security situation, the UPU said the Executive and Legislature should move faster and formalise the decentralisation of the policing architecture in Nigeria.Read Also:Restructuring must begin with character of individual NigeriansHouse of Reps member EgbonaIts president, Dr. Moses Taiga, said in a statement in Lagos that the decentralisation should reflect the model in the United States (U.S), the United Kingdom (UK) and other big multi-racial or multi-ethnic countries, like Nigeria. He said: Nigeria cannot continue to operate a unitary government and colour it as a federal system of government. This is creating avoidable tension in the polity, and it can explode in our faces with unpredictable consequences. The UPU reiterates its earlier call for true federalism. While the UPU believes in one Nigeria, the federating units and ethnicities should come together to decide the way forward.Taiga added: The Urhobo nation believes in strong regional structures, control of resources by the federating units that will now pay taxes to the Federal Government. The federating units should also be in charge of their local security. They should continue to own schools and tailor them to their local needs; same for health facilities.
