Fed Govt endows Benue goat farmers

By Uja Emmanuel, MakurdiAs part of efforts to boost production capacity of goat farmers and cushion the effect of COVID-19, the Federal Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development has empowered 40 goat farmers in Benue State.After a rigorous two-day training programme entitled Training and Empowering of 40 Small Holder Rural Households on Best Practices for Backyard Goat Production, which held in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, participants mostly rural goat farmers across the 23 local government areas of the state were empowered to begin massive goat production.The 40 farmers were given two goats each (male and female), 100 kg of feeds, and N5, 000.Dorathy Botar, who is the Chief Agric Officer of the ministry who was represented by the Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Abuja said: It was also to improve their nutritional status through protein consumption and improve their standard of living, as well as help absorb the shock of COVID-19 pandemic.The focus of the training programme for Benue goat farmers were the best production practices, feeding, vaccinations, marketing and forming themselves into co-operative societies to attract more incentives from the government.Beneficiaries who spoke to The Nation expressed their happiness over the training and the empowerment. They assured that they will not disappoint the government.They also called on the Federal Ministry of Agricultural to extend the programme to more communities.
