Published by The Nation on Sat, 20 Feb 2021

A 41-year old Nigerian, Anyadike Okonkwo, who hails from Imo State, has been in jail in Denmark since 2019.Okonkwo was actually seeking asylum from the Danish authorities before he was hurled into jail.He is one of the members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who participated in the May 29, 2016 rally of the group in Onitsha, Anambra State, to mark the Remembrance Day of the fallen heroes of Biafra during the Nigerian civil war.During the rally, the police was drafted in by the Nigerian government to disperse the group and this led to a fracas which left a police Sergeant dead. Two arrested members of IPOB disclosed, during interrogation, that in a bid to escape from the policeman who held Okonkwo by the neck pulling his shirt in the process, he manouvered in the crowd and the police officer fell into a culvert, leaving him with a deep cut on the head. The Police thereafter started a manhunt for Okonkwo after arrests of his colleagues. He left his hometown, Amakohia and travelled to Denmark through Cotonou after Nigerian Police got wind of his whereabouts and liaised with Beninoise authorities to initiate his arrest. In Denmark, Okonkwo was undergoing the process of securing his asylum documents when he was hurled into jail by the Danish police.Okonkwo through the help of a human right lawyer in Denmark is appealing his imprisonment even as he hopes to secure his asylum after a possible favourable hearing.
