HURIWA urges Buhari to constitute war council over insecurity

Published by The Nation on Tue, 23 Feb 2021

By Gbenga Omokhunu, AbujaHuman Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) on Tuesday advised President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a war council to be drawn from former service chiefs and a few good defence/security consultants, including three women.HURIWA expressed pleasure with the expeditious confirmations of erstwhile military chiefs as Ambassadors-designate.The group recalled the Senate confirmed former chief of Army staff, lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, erstwhile Chiefs of Defence Staff, Gabriel Olonisakin, Airs staff Abubakar Sadique and Navy, Ibok Ibas as non- career Ambassadors.Speaking against the backdrop of the confirmation, the association, in a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Director of Media Miss Zainab Yusuf, applauded the quick moves of the Senators and members of the House of Representatives in approving the nominations of the recently retired Military Service Chiefs as Ambassadors. The statement reads in part: We are deeply convinced that the confirmations of these great and astute professionals as Nigerias representatives in other jurisdictions, is one of the best decisions of the Ninth National Assembly for which posterity will be grateful to them. We have the profound belief that given their extensive trainings and their excellent love of Nigeria, their tenures as Ambassadors will be productive, fruitful and excellent.Read Also:Nigeria has highest number of poor people globallyEl-RufaiIn the light of the above, may we appeal to President Buhari to further tap from the rich Military experiences of these Generals by constituting a 7-man war council to be made up of these men and three other women who are competent, professionally meritorious, tested and trusted scholars in the field of defence/war and security matters. Their sole mandate would be to offer quality workable ideas on how best to successfully wage a law based war on terror successfully within an attainable but definitely brief timeline. This war on terror needs innovative ideas to win and we are of the opinion that wherever these Ambassadors may be posted, Mr. President can still consult them often on security matters so Nigeria can win the war on terror and establish greater peace, economic prosperity and sustainable development.HURIWA also expressed joy the confirmation of these immediate past service chiefs will motivate the serving soldiers to realise their loyalties to Nigeria will remain indelible. The group said the unprecedented milestone of making retired Service Chiefs who performed well as ambassadors: is constructive, positive and is the kind of records that grear nations around the world will learn rich lessons from us.HURIWA urges the new ambassadors-designate to continue to demonstrate their unique love of country and humanity in their future endeavours.
