Reverse 150 National Assembly promotions

Published by The Nation on Mon, 01 Mar 2021

By Sanni Onogu, AbujaThe National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) is under pressure to reverse over 150 promotions said to have been done without due process and adherence to Public Service Rules (PSR).A protest looms unless the Ahmed Kadi-Amshi-led NASC acts urgently. The promotion was done in August 2017 when Adamu Fika was the chairman of the commission, according to a document sighted by our reporter.Fika had, in a memo addressed to the immediate past Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, admitted that the action the commission took in addressing proper placements in the service was against the PSR.It was learnt that some of those promoted by-passed some steps in the service and were elevated above their peers. The development has led to a series of protests by aggrieved workers who are insisting that the action be reversed by the Kadi-Amshi-led commissionThe protesting workers are also demanding that the Federal Character Principle be observed in the promotion of workers. They argued that the alleged illegal promotion carried out by Fika-led NASC favoured his section of the country.Fikas letter to Sani-Omolori reads: To redress the situation and ensure equity, justice and fairness, the commission has, in the past two years, looked into cases presented by various workers and approved the adjustments of the appointment of some officers in the National Assembly Service. With effect from 24th of August, 2017, the National Assembly Service Commission shall not entertain any requests for proper placement as it doesnt exist in the Public Service, please. It was learnt that following intense pressure and protests by the aggrieved staff, the Kadi-Amshi-led NASC may review some of the promotions and placements are done in contravention of the PSR.The imminent review of the lopsided promotion by the Commission exercise is expected to affect over 100 workers of the National Assembly Service if carried out.The move, according to a source, is necessary to guide against bad blood in the Service and unnecessarily place those undeserving above their peers. The source added that the staff already shortlisted for possible demotion, are presently scouting for top traditional rulers from the North to prevail on Amshi to halt the move.He said the action would have been taken months ago, but noted that the pressure is growing by the day to halt the move.If the commission fails to act, we should expect some consequences.Responding to a question, the source said: Workers are angry and theyre waiting to see if the commission will act or do otherwise before we will begin to see documents flying around.
