Abiodun advocates peaceful resolution of land disputes

Published by The Nation on Fri, 05 Mar 2021

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said to ensure a harmonious co-existence and development in border areas of the country, there is need for continuous use of peaceful means in resolving boundary issues.Prince Abiodun, who stated this at a two-day interactive session of the National Boundary Commission with boundary committees of states in the Southwest, held at the Conference Hotel, Abeokuta, observed that without amicable resolution of conflicts, those living in the borders towns would continue to sufferdevelopment deficit, as no investor would invest in a troubled environment. We can hardly talk about production or boundary without talking about land. Recently, there have been communal issues between herders and farmers. These have to do with utilisation of the available land. It is, therefore, important that all of us must continue to adopt peaceful means of resolving the boundary issues. The fact remains that if we do not resolve boundary issues peacefully, the people of the border communities will suffer from both ends. There will be no development in such a place and even investors will not be attracted to such locations, he said. The governor attributed the oneness of the Yoruba to the low level of boundary infractions in theSouthwest. He, however, linked border issues to land being the major factor of production and a means of wealth generation.National Boundary Commission Director-General Adamu Adaji said the interactive session was meant to serve as a way of sensitising stakeholders on the activities of boundary managers atvarious levels and also a means to provide opportunity for stakeholders in the zone to interface with the commission on ways to strategise and fast track resolutions on issues of internal boundaries.
