Ibadan CCII: non-indigenes safe

Published by The Nation on Fri, 05 Mar 2021

By Yinka Adeniran, IbadanThe apex socio-cultural organisation of Ibadan indigenes, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), yesterday assured residents, especially northerners, of a continued hospitality in Oyo State.CCII President-General Chief Yemi Soladoye gave the assurance in a remark at an event to mark the 5th Coronation Anniversary of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, held at Bode Amao Hall, Ibadan House, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.Noting that the recent crises that occurred in Shasha and some parts of the state are never ethnic or tribal, as some people are making them to look, Soladoye said the Hausa communities, just like other non-indigenes, have years of peaceful co-existence with the Yoruba communities. He added that findings showed that the crisis, especially that of Shasha, was just between traders on personal issues.Soladoye said despite the crisis, Ibadan and by extension the entire Oyo State still had a good record of tolerance, hospitality and peaceful co-existence with settlers and non-indigenes in the entire country, which showed in the high number of non-indigenes settling in the city on a daily basis. He hailed Governor Seyi Makinde for the approach adopted in tackling the crisis, saying the indigenes and groups supported him.The CCII president-general called for a better youth engagement and provision of jobs for the unemployed, to get them engaged. He said: We want the whole world to know that despite the Shasha episode, Ibadan still maintains its record of high level of hospitality, tolerance, accommodation and indeed the largest city in Nigeria where ethnic groups live.Indigenes and non-indigenes live together without records of ethnic or religious riots at Shasha, Sabo, Ekotedo, Ago Tapa, Ago Igbira, Isale ijebu, Ago Tailor and Oke Shapati. The Shasha episode was caused by personalised issues between the traders, as against ethnic issue between Ibadan and her guests. We take this opportunity to confirm to our governor, Seyi Makinde that we stand by him and commend him for the efforts taken so far to restore peace to Shasha in particular and Oyo State in general.Speaking about the need for a review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy System, Soladoye urged the Olubadan to emulate some of his predecessors by setting up a committee to review the system. The event was attended by members of the Olubadan-in-Council, chiefs, community leaders, traditional rulers, titles holders, among others.
