By Damola Kola-DareThe Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) chapter has urged the Lagos State Government to upgrade the college into a university as the institution was losing its best hands to other schools.Speaking during a briefing on Thursday, last week on campus, Chairman of the union, Mr. Ige Ajayi, who said the upgrade was long overdue, said that converting AOCOED to a university of education would help Lagosians stay in the state to further their studies. He noted that the accreditation team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) had on three occasions given the College a pass mark for university status after rigorous assessment. The college has a rich pedigree and has, no doubt, paid its dues following its affiliation to the Ekiti State University. The college can boast of qualified human resources, adequate infrastructure, accredited curriculum, webometric ranking, and students, among others. There cannot be greater proof of AOCOEDs readiness to transform to a university status than her passing three consecutive rigorous accreditation exercises from the NUC teams in the last 15 years, he said.Ajayi said the college had produced notable Nigerians who continue to contribute to the overall growth and development of the country. He thanked Lagos State government for its unflinching support for the institution regarding payment of staff salaries during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic last year.A member of the union, Dr. Tola Olujuwon, said Lagos State was creating a loss for itself by delaying the upgrade. He said: Governments delay is tantamount to creating more loss itself because government has been using its money to train many of us here. But once our members get their Ph.D, other universities simply poach them. This is as a result of poor morale. Also, Dr. Luqman Hussain, the Director of Extra-Mural Studies and Community Education, AOCOED, said many lecturers in higher institutions in Lagos and beyond are drawn from the institution. There is brain drain already. We are losing most of our best brains to other institutions, he said.President of AOCOED Students Union, Comrade Bamgbose Oyedeji Joshua said students were eagerly anticipating the transition. He urged the Lagos State government to make it a reality during his tenure. Click here to read full news..
