Youth surge without employment can increase violence, says Interfaith forum

The Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace (IDFP) has warned against the increase in youth population without employment.The forum advised the Federal and State governments to provide job opportunities and enable skills acquisition of youths in order to curb violence in the country.It gave the advice during a webinar with the theme: Human Rights Violations and Armed Conflicts in Nigeria: The perspective of young people.The event which featured over 40 participants of Muslim and Christian faith, was moderated by the IDFP co-publicity secretaries, Elder Uzoaku Williams, and the Project officer, Hajiya Lantana Abdullahi.Read Also:Senator to youths: contribute to nation-buildingThe forum warned that the surge in youth population without adequate employment may lead to increase in violence.A communique issued at the end of the event advised the government to invest in free education and provide scholarships at all levels of education.It also urged government to establish leadership training centers as this will form foundations to train the youths to become responsible future leaders.The communique suggested that politicians also need re-orientation as most of them, during elections form youth groups, give them bad orientation by arming them to foment crisis. It becomes difficult to get back these arms from them after the electioneering period, according to the communique.
