Balyasny poaches a top derivatives trader from Goldman Sachs as demand for volatility traders heats up

<p><img src="https://static6.businessinsider.com/image/5d52ecd6cd978453904155f2-2400/2018-05-01t172207z245016866rc11288d1ba0rtrmadp3milken-conference-balyasny.jpg" border="0" alt="Balyasny" data-mce-source="Lucy Nicholson/Reuters" data-mce-caption="Dmitry Balyasny speaks at the 2018 Milken Conference in Beverly Hills, California."></p><p></p><bi-shortcode id="summary-shortcode" data-type="summary-shortcode" class="mceNonEditable" contenteditable="false">Summary List Placement</bi-shortcode><p>Balyasny Asset Management has poached a top volatility trader from Goldman Sachs as demand for equity derivatives pros heats up.</p><p>Travis Potter, a managing director in equity derivatives at Goldman, is joining Balyasny as a portfolio manager, sources familiar with the matter said.&nbsp;</p><p>Spokesmen for Balyasny and Goldman declined to comment.&nbsp;</p><p><img style="float:right;" src="https://static4.businessinsider.com/image/607074bb4943790018bb19f8-512/Screen Shot 2021-04-09 at 11.36.53 AM.png" border="0" alt="Travis Potter Balyasny" data-mce-source="LinkedIn"></p><p>Balyasny, the $9 billion fund run by Dmitry Balyasny, has been on a hiring spree the past year, hiring 40 new money managers and nearly 100 analysts in 2020, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-21/balyasny-boosts-ranks-of-money-managers-60-in-blockbuster-year'sref=tqMEybMr">a January report from Bloomberg</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Equity volatility traders have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-hires-index-volatility-trader-mitch-story-from-bofa-2021-3" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="60" data-uri="3cb0616c3b2cf770cc750443dac46272">in high demand</a> across Wall Street after a year flush with market shocks that pushed derivatives trading to its highest levels in a decade<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jpmorgan-volatility-trading-revenues-700-million-2020-6" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="60" data-uri="ff1903682bc44b9b6db9086158dbf97f">producing monster trading revenues</a>&nbsp;for banks in the process.&nbsp;</p><p>Another trader on the Goldman derivatives desk, Shawn Tuteja, also recently left for the buy-side, according to sources familiar with the matter.</p><p>The departures come on the back of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-hires-index-volatility-trader-mitch-story-from-bofa-2021-3">Goldman adding Mitchell Story</a>, a top volatility trader from Bank of America, to its derivatives desk.&nbsp;</p><p>Bank of America this week also lost David Kim, the head of equity client solutions and its most senior equity derivatives trader, to the buy side.
