Published by Nairaland on Thu, 10 Jul 2025

The Statue of Liberty was not moved from Paris to New York in the way people might assume. Instead, it was built in France and then shipped in pieces to the United States. Heres a quick breakdown of how it happened:

1. Design and Construction in France
The statue was designed by Frdric Auguste Bartholdi, with the internal structure engineered by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the Eiffel Tower guy). It was constructed in Paris between 1875 and 1884.

2. Dismantling for Shipment
Once completed, the statue was disassembled into 350 individual pieces and packed into 214 crates.

3. Shipping to New York
In 1885, the crates were loaded onto a French frigate named Isre and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to New York Harbor.

4. Reassembly in the U.S
After arrival, the statue was reassembled on Liberty Island (then called Bedloes Island) over a pedestal that had been constructed by the Americans. The full statue was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886.

So, Lady Liberty wasnt moved from Paris to New York.
