He added that many of these are service sector jobs that can be difficult to safely have large groups of people all together.

As some industries struggle to rebound quickly, others are continuing to climb above pre-pandemic levels. The following chart shows the percentage change in employment between February 2020 and May 2021. We also included each industry's median hourly wage as of May 2020 from BLS's National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates program along the horizontal axis.

Within the leisure and hospitality industry, which added 292,000 jobs in May, employment in food services and drinking places was 12.0% below pre-pandemic employment in May. Food services and drinking places made up most of leisure and hospitality job gains, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Accommodation, one of the detailed industries with the largest percent declines from February 2020 employment, was 25.0% below its pre-pandemic employment in May. Bunker said that this can in part be because people are still not really staying in hotels yet or traveling.

The motion-picture and sound-recording industry was 35.6% below pre-pandemic employment with only 13,900 jobs added in May. Employment in performing arts and spectator sports in May was 28.6% below pre-pandemic employment and added 13,000 jobs in May.

The construction industry lost 20,000 jobs in May. Speciality trade contractors contributed the most to this loss last month. Employment in speciality trade contractors was 3.5% below its pre-pandemic employment, or down by 167,500 from February 2020.

Several industries in May were above where they were in February 2020. This includes couriers and messengers, which was 17.0% above pre-pandemic employment in May, and general merchandise stores, which was 2.2% above pre-pandemic employment in May.

Join the conversation about this story »

NOW WATCH: Where you should go to stay safe during an earthquake
