Nigerias oldest school celebrates 162nd Founders Day

Our ReporterAs part of activities to mark the 162nd founders day anniversary of Nigerian oldest secondary school, CMS Grammar School, Lagos, a church service as well as a luncheon, holds today on the school premises. Also, projects worth scores of millions in Naira will be dedicated. According to the president Old Grammarians Society, (OGS), Olu Vincent, the society is delighted to celebrate the milestone given the many achievements recorded in the last two years in spite of the worldwide COVID19 pandemic and other militating factors.Vincent said, The theme of this years celebration is, Pluming wings for higher flight. And series of events such as speech and prize giving day; career talks for students and students feast, have been held in commemoration of the event. Our various chapters of the Old Grammarians Society in Ibadan, Abuja, the United Kingdom, as well as the United States of America, will also celebrate the event as usual, he said.Read Also;Childrens Day: Buhari vows to end school abductions, killingsThe President highlighted the roles the old boys have continued to play since the inception of the school in 1859. I am delighted to inform you that some projects and items will be dedicated on the 6th of June, 2021 as part of the celebration of this years founders day, he added. He appreciated the proprietors of the school for ensuring that the standards remain enviable. He applauded the cooperation between the proprietors and the OGS over the years which he said resulted in great developments.On his part, Ven. Ayo Olusa, the current administrator of CMS Grammar School, noted that the school immensely appreciates the OGS for its many support to the school. He recalled how the Missionaries came up with the idea of a school 162 years ago and gave the motto of the school as nisi dominus frustra extracted from Psalm 127, meaning Without God, we labour in vain, based on Macaulays vision enshrined in CSM mission which was to raise a bunch of boys who would be spiritually deep morally sound and academically endowed.He addeded that the school has been restored to its glory since returning to the Anglican Missions in 2001, after been taken over by the government in 1978, through the efforts of OGS, Lagos Anglican Schools Management Board (LASMAB), and Parents Teachers Association(PTA). He added that the OGS has assisted the mission tremendously in ensuring a massive process of physical reconstruction, rehabilitation, renovation and restoration of ethical values, since the return of the school to the church.Adding his voice to the discourse, Ali Kadiri, chairman of the 1994 class set of the OGS, said the society is sworn to the well being of the students and staff of the school as well as continuous infrastructural development. It is our own way of giving back to the system that molded us. We as old grammarians are forever grateful for the opportunity to attend CMS Grammar School and the little we can do is to contribute our quota to its wellbeing, he said.
