IBM salaries revealed: How much the $132 billion tech giant paid software engineers, business analysts, and more in 2021 (IBM)

Published by Business Insider on Tue, 08 Jun 2021

<bi-shortcode id="summary-shortcode" data-type="summary-shortcode" class="mceNonEditable" contenteditable="false">Summary List Placement</bi-shortcode>
Under CEO Arvind Krishna, the 110-year-old IBM has been striving to reinvent itself in the enterprise technology and cloud computing markets, which have been dominated by the likes of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Krishna's leadership, according to senior vice president Rob Thomas, marked the beginning of IBM's transition to "becoming a technology company again."

IBM's 2019 purchase of open source software firm Red Hat for a whopping $34 billion was also a "defining moment," Thomas previously told Insider, where the company put its stake in the ground as a software-first company, and began betting big on hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence. In AI specifically, Krishna has said IBM is no longer addressing general use cases for the tech, and is instead focused on solving business problems.

Part of IBM's reinvention also includes growing its 350,000-strong employee base to include top engineering talent in cloud, hybrid cloud, and AI, as well as fields like strategy, consulting, and business analysis. The company has also hired specialists to manage its IT operations and use of Oracle, SAP, and Salesforce software products.

Like other American companies, IBM is required to disclose salary information when it applies for H-1B work visas on behalf of "high skilled" current or prospective workers from outside the US. Among its big tech peers, IBM is one of many that has relied on the visa as a pipeline for talent and to stay competitive.

Insider analyzed the 241 H-1B visas IBM applied for through the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification since January of this year to find out what it has paid engineers, business analysts and consultants, digital strategists, and more. The highest-paid IBM employees can make as much as $335,000.40 in base salary, per that data.

The data includes salary ranges and sometimes the actual amount paid, but doesn't include stock and bonus compensation, which can be a large sum in addition to what many tech employees take home in annual salary.

It's also noteworthy that the salaries are paid based on location, which Insider has specified below, and not meant to be indicative of the entirety of IBM's compensation packages. The salaries may differ from that of US workerscritics have said the visa makes it easier for American companies to take advantage of H-1B workers' immigrant status. Even so, the data provides a rare look into salaries across major companies like IBM.

Here's how much IBM pays its engineers, strategists, consultants, and other key roles in 2021:

Software engineers and developers: The highest paid IBM engineer listed in the data is a program director in California, paid up to about $335,000.
<img
