His original complaint made a raft of allegations, including breach of contract, but the trial ultimately hinged more narrowly on allegations of copyright infringement.

Reilly had first approached Wozniak via email in 2010, pitching him on the idea of a "high tech university" utilizing Wozniak's name as a brand. The pair went back and forth over several years, including signing papers and attending a meeting with potential backers in 2012, but Reilly's idea for the "Woz Institute of Technology" never came to fruition.

Then in 2017, tech firm Coder Camps launched "Woz U" after approaching Wozniak with their own proposal.

The announcement prompted Reilly to email Wozniak about the similarities, to which he enthusiastically replied: "You had the right idea ... I doubt it would have happened without your initial idea!" Some time later, Reilly decided to sue in Arizona District Court.

Wozniak's win comes shortly after he lost a separate legal battle against YouTube. He had sought to sue the video-hosting site over bitcoin scams that falsely claimed to be endorsed by him.

Join the conversation about this story »

NOW WATCH: Why I'm throwing away every plastic thing in my kitchen ASAP
