Nasarawa council poll: Sule canvasses competent candidates

Published by The Nation on Thu, 15 Jul 2021

By Linus Oota, Lafia Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has disclosed that he would not want a win-win situation in the October 6 local government election in the state. The Governor spoke yesterday during the presentation of Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) regulations 2021.NASIEC had scheduled October 6, 2021, for the conduct of local government election in the state.Governor Sule explained that as long as the winner is a citizen of Nasarawa State, he or she should be given the opportunity to contribute his or her quota to the development of the state.Governor Sule explained that he would want the people to elect only competent, qualified, tested and trusted people to handle the affairs of the local councils irrespective of the party platform.Unveiling the NASIEC 2021 Regulations in Lafia, the governor believed that the document was a furtherance of the commissions determination to ensure the conduct of a credible election in line with the global best practice. He, therefore, advised NASIEC to live above board by abiding strictly to its regulation in order to exercise its independence and earn the confidence of all.As an electoral body, the commission must exercise neutrality and objectivity in the conduct of its statutory mandate. The commission must not align itself with any political party, candidate or interest no matter the odds in the forthcoming and subsequent elections. In the same manner, let me especially call on the electorates to ensure that only credible, competent, tested, transparent and accountable people are elected into the offices of the chairman and councillors of Local Government Councils. This is the only way we can achieve our collective desire, the governor said.Chairman of the Commission, Ayuba Usman Wandai said the Commission is empowered by Section 2041 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) with the approval of the government to rules or otherwise regulates its own procedure or confer powers to impose a duty. With the commission efforts to put in place procedure rules and structures that would enable adequately, effectively and seamlessly discharged its mandate and specifically to put in place internal control mechanism for optimal output and productively has been able to document this set of rules tagged NASIEC regulations 2021.
