Brian Babin, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, expressed on Saturday that "history will be unforgiving" to any congressional Republican who doesn't back a challenge to the Electoral College certification of President-elect Joe Biden's win on Jan. 6.

Babin, who represents a district based in southeastern Texas, took to Twitter to announce that he spoke with Trump, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, and many of the Republicans who are supporting the president's dispute of the election results by phone to plan a strategy for objecting to the election results. The congressman and at least 139 of his House GOP colleagues are expected to vote against the final certification.

"Had a call w/ @realDonaldTrump, @GOPLeader, & TONS of Jan. 6 election objectors," he tweeted. "Talked strategy - VERY encouraged! @HouseGOP/@SenateGOP: time to stand up & be counted. Mo Brooks of Alabama and Paul Gosar of Arizona, who early on stated that Trump won the election despite Biden's clear victory.

While the movement to support Trump has gained a lot of steam among House Representatives, Senate Republicans were cool on the matter until this past week, until Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri said he would back a challenge to the election results. Hawley's announcement led to several more GOP senators taking up the cause, including Sens. Their focus in invalidating mail-in ballots or alleging fraud have been centered on Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, all states won by Trump in 2016 that flipped to the Democratic column in 2020.

Join the conversation about this story »

NOW WATCH: How waste is dealt with on the world's largest cruise ship
