AFCON 2015: Day 10 Scores, Results, Standings and Africa Cup of Nations Schedule

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 27 Jan 2015

A pair of draws in Group B's final two matches on Monday in the 2015 AFCON saw DR Congo and Tunisia go through to the quarter-finals while Zambia and Cape Verde head home.DR Congo rallied in the second half to bag a crucial equaliser, which eventually proved enough to see them through after Zambia and Cape Verde's weather-affected match ended in a drab 0-0.Here are the latest results and updated groups after play on Day 10:DR Congo 1-1 TunisiaDR Congo's second-half equaliser put them through to the quarter-finals along with Tunisia as the pair played out a 1-1 draw in Bata.Tunisia were by far the better side and took the lead in the first half throughAhmed Akaichi. However, against the run of play,Jeremy Bokila equalised, and with Zambia and Cape Verde drawing in the group's other match, the result was enough to see both teams through. It was the Tunisians who looked the better side in the early stages, Yassine Chikhaoui spurning two decent opportunities in the first 25 minutes.DR Congo could not really get into the game and were punished on the half hour when Akaichi headed home a deserved opener afterChikhaoui's effort had been blocked, per 101 Great Goals:Georges Leekens' men had the ball in the net again five minutes later butChikhaoui's volleyed stunner was ruled out for offside, per SandalsForGoalposts:The terrific Chikhaoui had another goal disallowed just after the break and Wahbi Khazri missed a sitterto leave DR Congo still in with a shout of making it out of Group B.The Leopards took advantage of their good fortune by scoring in the 66th minute, Bokila firing homeDieumerci Mbokani's knock-down for an unlikely equaliser. At 1-1, both teams were set to go through barring an opener in the other Group B match, and with another goal not forthcoming anywhere, the match eventually ended in jubilation for the pair.Tunisia will now play hosts Equatorial Guinea in the first knockout round while DR Congo will play Congo after the latter topped Group A on Sunday.Cape Verde 0-0 ZambiaCape Verde and Zambia played out a 0-0 draw in their final Group B game of AFCON 2015 on Monday, a result that was useless to both sides and saw them knocked out of the tournament. It was a severely rain-affected encounter inEbebiyin, leading to a somewhat farcical spectacle in which both sides were largely limited to long-ball football.Puddles formed as the match went on, significantly hamstringing Cape Verde and Zambia in their pursuit of any decent play, per ESPN FC's John Brewin:Neither side had managed to pick up a win in their opening two matches, but qualification was still a possibility for the pair. While the opening half drew half chances at either end, there was a distinct lack of clinical finishing, a combination of the poor weather and the misfiring form of both sides, per Opta:Substitute Djaniny unleashed a20-yard strike just after the hour which drew a strong save fromKennedy Mweene for the first real chance after the break. With the other Group B match heading for a draw, desperation ensued in the final quarter of the match with Cape Verde and Zambia set to go out if neither could find a goal.Zambia's Chisamba Lungu set up a golden opportunity forEvans Kangwa with 12 minutes remaining, but the striker could not turn it home.Kangwa had another opportunity late on to win it but firedstraightat the keeper, while Cape Verde spurned a couple of free-kick chances. However, neither side ever really came close to a winner, and Zambia and Cape Verde both return home after a 0-0 draw in the driving rain.Read more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
