Adeiny Hechavarria Reportedly Likely to Be Traded by Marlins Before Mets Series

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 26 Jun 2017

Miami Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria is set to rejoin the team Tuesday following his stint on the disabled list. That is, if he's even on the team anymore. On Sunday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reported the Marlins are "aiming" to trade him before Tuesday's contest against the New York Mets. Frisaro previously wrote Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday was the targeted date to bring Hechavarria back from his time on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain and rehab assignment in Class A ball.Frisaro noted the Marlins plan on moving forward with JT Riddle as the regular shortstop and have undergone discussions with the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays regarding a trade for Hechavarria. The trade would primarily be to clear his salary of $4.35 million this season, per Frisaro, although injuries have been a problem. This was his second trip to the DL because of an oblique strain, and he's played just 20 games this year.Hechavarria has a slash line of .277/.288/.385 in those 20 contests, which would be an improvement on last year's batting average of .236. However, Hechavarria is more known for his slick fielding ability than his bat.According toFanGraphs, he was responsible for nine total defensive runs saved above average at shortstop in 2015 and again in 2016.He is still just 28 years old and theoretically in the middle of his prime and could serve as a defensive replacement or everyday infielder for a team in need of a fielding boost. Frisaro pointed to the Cardinals as one potential trade partner, which would make sense considering they are 29th in the league in defensive runs saved at shortstop, perFanGraphs. It appears as if baseball and Marlins fans will know Hechavarria's fate by Tuesday.
