The Republic of Angola became an independent sovereign nation on November 11, 1975, while its civil war continued until 1991. At this stage, there was a ceasefire arrangement but it broke down in 1993 and the civil war could not end. There was a second ceasefire in 1994 which eventually broke down in 1998.
