Barclays Premier League Table: Updated 2014 EPL Outlook After Week 8 Results

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 19 Oct 2014

Like a guide to entertainment in football, Week 8 of the 2014-15 Premier League season has featured a little bit of everything, including goals by the boatload, red cards, eight-goal thrillers and more.On Saturday morning, Sergio Aguero got this week's action started with a man-of-the-match performance to guide his Manchester City side past Tottenham Hotspur, while Southampton notched eight past glum Sunderland.Drama has been at a premium already as the Premier League giants seek to etch out some success in a division living up to its "anyone can beat anyone" principles, with Chelsea maintaining their perch on top of the pile.Saturday, Oct. 18 RecapSaturday started as any neutral would have hoped to see it continue, with Aguero claiming all Manchester City's goals en route to a 4-1 drubbing of 10-man Tottenham Hotspur.Referee Jonathan Moss awarded no less than four penalties at the Etihad Stadium, as Manuel Pellegrini's Argentinian ace tucked away two but, like Roberto Soldado, missed with one of his spot kicks.FourFourTwo Stats Zone shows just how busy Aguero was in front of Hugo Lloris' goal:Spurs looked like challenging at 2-1 down, but just a few minutes after Joe Hart saved Soldado's attempt, Federico Fazio was sent off for a foul that left his side gasping for air, and their inevitable crumble soon came.It was a similar story at St. Mary's, and after demolishing Sunderland 8-0, Southampton may feel even more confident in the knowledge that this new Saints line-up can most certainly better that of previous years.Liam Bridcutt and Santiago Vergini netted own goals to make Gus Poyet's trip to the south coast a painful one, with Graziano Pelle grabbing a brace along the way to push Ronald Koeman's men within one point of the Citizens.Squawka may be right in suggesting the long trip south doesn't aid the visiting outfit, but then the Saints didn't lose once at Newcastle or Sunderland last season:If that result was an entertaining one for the home side, Arsenal fans weren't as fortunate. Hull City took a 2-2 draw from the Emirates Stadium as Alexis Sanchez tried his best to haul the hosts toward victory.Summer signings Mohamed Diame and Abel Hernandez provided the finishing touches for Steve Bruce's side after Sanchez opened the scoring, and it was the Chilean's input that proved crucial near the end, too, setting up Danny Welbeck's equaliser. The Gunners were coping with a bout of defensive absences, but it's becoming an all too familiar story in north London, and again the home fans were made to pay.Bleacher Report's James McNicholas quoted Arsene Wenger in noting the importance of the fixture:Chelsea and West Ham United also managed to take results away from home, the former beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park while Sam Alladryce's side triumphed 3-1 at Burnley. It's the first time this season Chelsea have been kept to within a goal while winning, giving Neil Warnock some cause for optimism, and the cards were out in number, too, as Damien Delaney and Cesar Azpilicueta were each sent off.West Ham, meanwhile, continue their rise as a surprisingly promising attacking machine this term, with summer arrivals Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia each scoring at Turf Moor to give the Hammers a three-point haul.Per OptaJoe, West Ham have developed a taste for headed goals, too:The east Londoners have now scored 15 goals this season, a tally they didn't amass until Boxing Day last season and emphasising what an impact having some consistency among strikers can do for a team. But while it's the attack doing it for Allardyce, Roberto Martinez relied largely on defence to take Everton past Aston Villa, with Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman each scoring in a 3-0 rout of the Villans.Romelu Lukaku came in with the third to make three goals in his last five outings, and after five matches without a win, the Toffees picked a fine moment to spring back into life, also keeping just their second clean sheet of the season so far. Finally, Newcastle United and Leicester City were delayed in kicking off their game after one of the giant screens at St. James' Park was suspected to have come loose, per BBC Sport:Perhaps the Magpies should look to start all their matches late, as they would go on to clinch their first Premier League win of the season and perhaps helped stave off the calls for Alan Pardew's dismissal as a result. What's more, Newcastle did what the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton could not in keeping a clean sheet against the Foxes, finally giving the north-east outfit reason to be upbeat.Read more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
