Chelsea Transfer News: Despite His Greatness, Blues Have No Use for Lionel Messi

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 29 Nov 2014

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho dismissed any speculation his club may complete the stunning signing of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi on Friday, and such a move would make little sense for the Blues, regardless. As reported by Goal's Ryan Benson, the Portuguese manager almost had to laugh when he was asked whether there was any truth to the rumours the Argentina forward would be the subject of a bid from Chelsea in the summer:My reaction is that the media world changed so much that the football world also changed so much. And I think, in this moment, it's so easy, so easy to have non-truths circulating. It's so easy that some people put news without confirming or speak about rumours. Obviously [Messi going to Chelsea] is not true. Obviously it's not true.Messi is believed to be unhappy with his current club, per Benson, and this has put a host of English clubs on high alert. While an imminent exit from the Blaugrana is unlikely, as previously detailed in this article, any list of potential destinations likely wouldn't feature the Blues.Since reappointing Mourinho as manager, Chelsea have made the conscious move to scale back on the mega-spending, electing to acquire players who present a clear need and investing in younger contributors with plenty of potential.Last summer saw the arrival of Diego Costa andCesc Fabregas, and both became instant hits at Stamford Bridge. One of the main reasons for this is the simple fact they were neededMourinho needed a playmaker to insert in his system, and a striker with a better conversion rate than the likes of Fernando Torres. The plan worked. This year's Chelsea squad is one of the best the manager has ever worked with, and the early results have been very promising. The Blues hold a commanding lead in the Premier League standings and have already qualified for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The talent is there, as is the balance. There's a strong, deep bench, a fantastic starting 11 and plenty of young talent waiting in the wings. Where would Messi come in'Some players transcend the game or a team's individual needs, and Messi is certainly one of them. But unlike many of his contemporaries, he needs a specific system around him for his team to take full advantage of his specific abilities. It's why he's won trophy after trophy with Barcelona and failed to produce for the national team.Chelsea have their system, and in the past few years, they've carefully acquired the pieces to fit said system. The squad is winning matches now, and winning big, so it would make little sense for Mourinho to blow up the whole thing and start over, with the sole intention of incorporating Messi into his side. That is, if he could afford him. As shared by The Times' Duncan Castles, the forward is valued at about 250 million, a price no club in the world was able to pay last season:The Blues have a significant budget, but they're not Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid (and the latter club would likely not present a realistic destination for Messi, either). Add in Mourinho's cutbacks on spending and a transfer for Messi no longer fits the club's philosophy. And again, all of this is contingent on Messi actually leaving the Catalans, something football writer Kristian Sturt just can't see happening:Barcelona made Messi into the player he is today, and in turn, the club was allowed to build its incredibly successful decade on the back of his efforts. The two parties are linked, and unless there's a major falling-out between player and club, he's not going anywhere. And if he was, London would not be a likely destination. Chelsea's current success and new financial philosophy means they're better off passing on one of the world's greatest players, in order to preserve one of the world's greatest teams.Follow @ReverschPassRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
