Mimiko Deplores Incessant Strike Actions

Published by Guardian on Sat, 19 Nov 2011

GOVERNOR Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State yesterday deplored incessant strike actions in the country, noting that the development is not healthy for the growth of the nation's democracy. He therefore canvassed more proactive solutions to problems associated with the industrial sector in the country.Mimiko who spoke while declaring open the Seventh National Labour Relations Summit at Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, said strike action is gradually fading out in developed economies of the world, noting that it is ironically just taking firm root in Nigeria. He said some professional bodies such as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) should not ordinarily embrace strike as the option of crises resolution and dispute settlement by virtue of their importance to the society.'How does someone for instance, justify the shutting down of hospitals to patients in the name of strike actions' At the end of the day, those at the receiving end will be those at the lowest rung of the ladder. Labour leaders should find a better replacement for strike.'If you consider our health programme for pregnant women in Ondo State, it has no doubt received global recognition. I mean, it has become a benchmark internationally. We call it 'Safe Motherhood'. But despite this global recognition of the programme, I am constantly afraid of hospitals being shut down in the name of strike action,' he said.At the event also attended by the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed Mimiko said the federal government on its part should provide minimum standards of essential services for the citizens. He used the occasion to affirm his membership of the Labour Party (LP), describing it as 'the only party in Nigeria today that is pro-people and pro-labour'.
