Fayemi Awards 14 Road Contracts

Published by Guardian on Sun, 20 Nov 2011

Cautions Against Shoddy JobsEKITI State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has warned contractors handling 14 newly awarded road projects across the state against shoddy jobs and involvement in shady deals with government officials. The governor gave the warning in Ado Ekiti, on Friday,at a meeting with contractors on specifications for the construction of the new roads. The projects are: dualisation of Old Garage-Ojumose road in Ado Ekiti; Old Garage-Ajilosun road; Igede-Awo- Osi-Ido road; Ikere-Igbara Odo road and Ikogosi-Ipole Iloro-Efon road.Others are Ijan-Ise road; Ijero-Ipoti-Ayetoro road, Ilawe-Igbara Odo-Ibujiroad; Ikole-Ijesa-Isu-Iluomoba road; Ijan-Ise road; Oye-Ikun-Otun road; dualisation of Igbehin- Fist Baptist Church (via post office); Ijigbo Baptist College-Ilawe.The projects will be flagged off during the governor's tour of the 16 local government areas, billed to commence on Monday.Fayemi said the state could not afford repeat of past failed experiences in road construction. He said his administration is not ready to work with any contractor who lacks ability to deliver durable roads 'on cost and in time.''Ekiti people are desirous of improvement on their roads and we want jobs that will be done; that we will not go back there in one year's time. That was the experience around here; under two years the roads are gone,' he said. The governor said contractors were carefully selected based on record, merit and ability to deliver a quality job.He said the state government will pay for the construction work through the bond it obtained at the capital market, stressing that government would not accept any excuse for non-performance or allow contractors to go on holiday while work is ongoing during the dry season.'We will pay you upfront, your mobilisation of 30 per cent allowed by the law. But I am not going to entertain any holiday. So, the idea that you are going on holiday between December 15 and January 15, as is common in the construction industry, is not allowed in this state,' he said.Responding on behalf of the contractors, Engineer David Omoya thanked government for confidence reposed in them, assuring that they would not only work according to specification but also deploy logistics for timely delivery of the roads.
