Wikki Tourists win NNL Super Cup, league gets kick off date

WIKKI Tourists of Bauchi yesterday defeated Akure's Rising Stars in a winner takes all match to clinch the first Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Cup at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi.The tournament is a champion of champions clash involving all the four teams promoted to the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).Akwa United made a late rally to clinch the third place with a 3-1 win over Jigawa Golden Stars.Defender Solomon Jaberson headed in the only goal of the game off a tailored cross from the right flank late in the second half to insure that Wikki ended as the undisputed kings of the NNL.The defeat left Rising Stars with the silver medal after Akwa United's defeat of Jigawa Golden Stars.Wikki Tourists took home the giant gold-plated trophy, just as outstanding players and coaches won awards including the MVP, Best Behaved Team, Best Media House, Best Referee, and Golden Boot.Meanwhile, the NNL board says the 2011/2012 season would off in January and end in June.In an eight-point communiqu released after its inaugural meeting at the Zaranda Hotels in Bauchi, the board also resolved to set up a strong marketing machinery that would support the packaging of the league into a viable sponsorship platform for corporate partnerships.The communiqu reads in part: 'That the Board reviewed the current state of the National League and approved a road map for the prompt and vigorous repositioning of the League to make it attractive to corporate Nigeria, fans and other major stakeholders.'The communiqu signed by Sir Emmanuel Ochiagha and Kunle Sonada disclosed that 'the 2011/2012 season has been slated to kick-off in January and end in June 2012 to align with the international football calendar.
