Letter to President Jonathan

Published by Nigerian Compass on Tue, 22 Nov 2011

I am writing this letter to you because I have a lot I wish to pour out from my heart, but as an ordinary citizen who does not have access to Aso-Rock, it is my belief my letter will get across to you through the indefatigable print media. As a result of the fact that, few weeks ago, some Nigerians in an Osun State Government bus were turned back on their way to Abuja by the police machinery, I am inclined to brush aside my willingness to desperately see Your Excellency. As a Nigerian with no political affiliation, unlike those who were on their way to Abuja, going alone to Abuja to see Your Excellency might be disastrous, not with the growing insecurity in almost every part of the country. Aside this, the police, more than ever before, have stepped up their game of extra-judicial killings which I wish not to be a victim of, yet I have always wondered how Aso-Rock became an inaccessible enclave to the vast majority of people who voted in our political leaders. It is my belief that series of letters in this format might have been written to Your Excellency, yet as a responsible citizen whose heart is always with Nigeria, it behoves me to put you on track when you are going wrong, as many are inclined to agree. Since your inauguration speech on May 29, I have watched with keen interest how little has changed in our dear country. Rather, what we have witnessed since May 29 have been brazen fascism, profligacy of the highest order and reckless abandon of the vast majority of people who voted you into power. It is quite unfortunate that many political leaders in Nigeria spit at and forget the very people who were responsible for their victory at the polls. It is more than hundred days into your administration, yet little is what we have seen from a man of your calibre. We know you are faced with a huge problem of insecurity and the Boko Haram menace, but that should not deter the development agenda of your dear country. I am sure Your Excellency has not toured the 36 states to see for himself the poor roads that continue to relegate us to the background. I am sure Your Excellency does not know that people are suffering and dying on a daily basis as a result of neglect. Hospitals are non-existent while available ones do not have what it takes to cure malaria. With the ever increasing population of the world, Nigeria's youths have no job to sustain them. Corruption is fought with kid gloves while there is a staggering difference between the haves and those who do not have. There is insecurity everywhere as the next man does not know where the next gunshot will be fired. It seems Nigeria's presumed failure by 2015 is coming to fruition. As a citizen, I question the rationale behind your insistence to remove subsidies next year without looking at the implications on the people who voted you in and most importantly the economy. I question why there are no workable refineries in the country and why you fail to question those who are behind it. I question why you are so concerned about oil when there are other resources that your government pays subsidies on. I question why you are not telling your economic team to look for alternative means to improve the lives of Nigerians. I can go on and on.The single tenure shock is still rife in our minds as you, from all indications, should have told Nigerians before the April elections your intention on the issue rather than the time you did when burning issues need your attention. This single tenure issue, however, does not show insincerity on Your Excellency's part. Of course, the third term agenda is still very much alive in our minds and another of its brand will certainly be shoved off by many. A delicate issue of this dimension should not be the exclusive preserve or 'idea' of an inter-party body, national or state assemblies or the governors forum which is usually selfish in nature, but the idea and agreement of every Nigerian. You should take the bull by the horn by putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians. You should push aside policies that will never impact on the people and the nation. Your Excellency must not forget that your victory at the polls has opened a new vista of opportunities for other minority groups suppressed by 'cabalic powers' to also aim for the Presidency. Your failure to entrench a true development agendum and ultimately take this nation to an enviable height will further deepen the crisis of political aspiration of the other minority groups in the country. The President should remember that policies that will elevate the vast majority of the people without total satisfaction or submission to political or economic godfathers will forever be remembered by our unborn children as an opportunity towards viable leadership. As a young Nigerian, I hold that day in history.'Raheem Oluwafunmniyi, is a social commentator and political analyst, wrote in from Ibadan via creativitysells@gmail.com
