Jonathan pledges support for military on disaster mgt

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said government would support the military to adopt competent disaster management practices.The president, represented by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinri, made the remarks yesterday at the 39th congress on military medicine tagged 'military medicine and disaster management' in Abuja.He said many nations were grappling with problems of natural and other forms of disasters including flood.'The resolutions reached at the end of congress on disaster management once ratified will be given the necessary backing they required to make them fully operational,' he said.The Chairman of the Emergency Plan Implementation Committee of the Defence Headquarters, Brigadier General Tahir Umar, said the problems of involvement of military in disaster management included lack of flow of information between the military and the civilian authorities as well as the lack of integration of the military in disaster management systems.The newly elected chairman of the International Committee of Military Medicine, Brigadier General Hillary Agada, said the essence of the Congress was to strengthen cooperation between military doctors and ensure that military medical services have means to work together using same methods especially with the increase in international military operation.
