Fourteen-year-old Obeten eyes 2016 Olympic Games

Published by Guardian on Wed, 23 Nov 2011

AT the 2010 edition of the National School Sports Festival in Kano, she won a silver and a bronze medal in the long and high jumpevents, but at this year's tournament, tagged Calabar 2011, 14-year-old Koyonor Ebri Obeten has already won two gold medals and is still hoping for another in triple jump. The junior class three student of West Africa Peoples Institute told The Guardian yesterday that her target was to represent Nigeria at the2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Her confidence stems from the fact that she is being tutored by one of the world's greatest athlete, Lee Evans, whom she said would train her for the Olympics. With a jump of 5.30metres in long jump and 1.42metres in high jump, the teenager hopes to improve her jump before the2016.'I am happy winning two gold medals because in Kano 2010, I picked silver and bronze in the intermediate event and this year I was ableto fulfil my dream of gold medals in the two events. Initially, I was scared when I wanted to jump but I had to encourage myself and mydetermination helped me to win the gold.'The training we went through before the championship has really put me in good shape for the competition,' she said, adding, 'I believe with the kind of training we have been exposed to in Cross River under Coach Lee Evans and Ernest, I am hopeful to be part of the Team Nigeria to the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.'Obeten is so sure of her ability to excel that she doesn't hesitate to tell her new fans that she would add another gold medal to her kitty at the on-going Calabar 2011.According to the JSS three student, 'my confidence has indeed improved because without having confidence in yourself I don't think any athlete can achieve anything on track.'I am sure of another gold in the triple jump and this is also attainable with determination and confidence.
