Rewarding inefficiency

Nuhu Ologbonyo, 14, Omokide Street, Igarra, Edo State, +23480233759: The national honours awards should be given to people that sacrificed their lives for the nation as well as those that have impacted on our lives positively. To me, the President ought to have made this years award a symbolic one by conferring the awards on those innocent Nigerians killed illegally by the police at will and at checkpoints; the downtrodden and poverty-stricken masses; the unemployed university graduates; those youth corps members killed during the last elections and the various victims of acts of terrorism carried out by members of the Boko Haram sect. Nigeria has consistently been found wanting on virtually all key governance indicators so much that there is no basis of awarding 350 Nigerians in the midst of the national decay' What have they done to deserve it' Though a few of the recipients like businessman Aliko Dangote deserve the award, many of them contributed significantly to our failures. We should learn to reward efficiency and merit in our national life.
