Obasanjo becomes IITA ambassador

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accepted to be a Goodwill Ambassador of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture to help boost the fight against hunger and poverty in Africa.A statement issued by the IITA on Wednesday said the Director-General of the institute, Dr. Nteranya Sanginga, announced Obasanjos acceptance after a closed-door meeting with the former president in Abeokuta on Tuesday.The statement said as goodwill ambassador, Obasanjo would help advocate policies that would advance research and bring to reality the long-awaited African Green Revolution.It further said that the former president would help extend, amplify and focus on the work and mission of IITA in sub-Saharan Africa.Obasanjos work, it added, would involve helping to raise 20 million Africans out of poverty and to redirect 25 million hectares of degraded land for sustainable use in the next 10 years.Sanginga said the institute was honoured by Obasanjos acceptance of the offer.
