Published by Guardian on Thu, 24 Nov 2011

LAGOS State is still leading on the medals table, but host, Cross River, is hoping to take over the baton at the end of today's events. With the host dominating in athletics, Lagos still tops the medals table with 81 gold, 71 silver and 58 bronze medals. The Lagos' medals haul came from 14 events, but Cross River is banking on the results of athletics, judo and soccer to be decided today. The hosts have amassed 67 gold, 67 silver and 74 bronze medals, while Ondo is third on the medals table with 51 gold, 34 silver and 59 bronze medals.Speaking on his impression of the festival, President, Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), Ibrahim Muhammad, says the competition has been successful and violence free since it kicked off last week.'We thank God that the tournament has been so far hitch-free without any ugly incident. The athletes have used the event to interact with their colleagues from other parts of the country.'At the NSSF, we don't just want to help in unearthing talents, we also want to unify the country through sports because we know sports is a veritable tool to bring people together. With all the 28 states taking part in the championship, we hope the sporting federations and the National Sports Commission (NSC) will complement our efforts by making use of the talents that were unearthed at the championship,' he said.He lauded the host for putting up a good event, saying its support has gone a long way at ensuring the smoothness of the tournament. The events were dominated by teams from South West, South South and South East, as the only northern team that won an event is Kano, which emerged the overall winner in handball.
