Gemstones, priceless gifts of nature

Published by Guardian on Thu, 24 Nov 2011

NOW that we have examined the tenets of good health, let us take a look at those gifts given to us by nature to help alleviate those ailing state that may arise when a weak link in the body chain cracks resulting in one disease or the other..Many of us may have heard and seen these priceless gifts of nature but have passed them by without the least inkling of their pricelessness. Many of us simply see them as jewellery to be worn at will and without further ado. Some who have been privileged to benefit from them believe they are charms that should be hidden from every eye to avoid ridicule. Yet these priceless gifts should actually be second nature to us in an environment where we claim to be close to nature. When nature gives us a gift, it is usually a wholesome one, which if received in gratitude and humility enfolds its rich blessings and treasures. Thus the revelation of these stones demands our utmost respect, humility and gratitude if not love and worshipful adoration of our Creator and Lord.Gemstones! Yes, the priceless gifts of nature that are meant to enrich our life! The term in itself best describes what it brings, what it offers; gem suggests something precious, a treasure of inestimable worth and stone a solid matter that exists in nature. In my own words gemstones can be described as inestimable treasures arising from nature. In Europe, the science of Gemmology and gemstone therapy is dedicated to the study of this inexhaustible field, because year in year out, new gemstones are discovered, affording mankind help in the alleviation of new ailments arising from our mega-stressful lives. These gems are studied and used not only in Europe, but in Asia, North America and Australia as well. It is only the African continent that has had difficulties benefiting from these treasures due to our erroneous beliefs and misconceptions of them. Let us take a look at what these gemstones really are and how they come about. What are gemstones'Gemstones are formed at unimaginable depths within the earth's crust under extremely high temperatures, pressures and specific stellar constellations second in terms of depth of earth crust only to diamonds and peridots. When volcanoes erupt these treasures are brought to the surface of the earth in the form of lava! The lava is subject to the influence of the elements ' water, air, condensation, and evaporation, minerals in the location and cooling or to a combination of these effects described as primary, secondary or tertiary, which effects give rise to very hard and stable minerals, imbued with high volcanic energy. After the solidification of the lava the minerals can be retrieved from primary sites, which are above the earth's crust at some depths or from secondary sites on the earth's surface from the ashes of volcanic lava. These retrieved minerals are made of chemical components widely known, studied and used in the field of geological sciences. Because the earth's crust contains a lot of silicon and oxide, which is also known as quartz, most gemstones contain quartz. The mountain crystal, for example, is pure quartz, that is, pure silicon dioxide (SiO2). Other chemical substances then combine with this basic component to form different gemstones of different colours and structures found all over the world, In Nigeria we have one of the best Beryl (e.g. Aquamarine, Beryl etc) and Topaz depot in the West, Plateau, Kaduna and Bauchi states. However, not all gemstones are formed beneath the earth crust, some, such as corals, are formed by living organisms called polyps that build coral reefs from the skeleton of their dead relatives to serve as abode for the colony. These colourful reefs are formed only in warm, shallow waters not more than 30 metres deep, where there is adequate light for the organisms that build them. Suitable waters are found in Japan, Australia, the east of the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Island. Also pearls are gifts of the sea; seashells secrete a mother-of-pearl like substance if a foreign body swims into their shells. They encapsulate these foreign bodies as part of their defensive mechanisms to give rise to pearls. Today, natural pearls are very difficult to find, most of those available in the market are artificially cultured in China and Japan by throwing grains of sand or rice into seashells. Mother-of-pearl and sea opals are obtained from white seashells and paua shells respectively.Forms of gemstonesGemstones generally occur in three forms; as crystals like the natural quartz or in geode formation, as octahedrals like the fluorite family and as coarse deposits, which can be cut, tumbled and polished into different sizes of gemstones. Those imbued with the highest amount of energies are those of crystal or geode formations. After dissolution in lava, gemstones are then subject to the primary, secondary or tertiary effects mentioned above that finally lead to their formation. As a result they have different geometric forms: amorphous, monocline, triclinic, hexagonal, cubic, rhombic, tetragonal and trigonal forms, different colours and consistencies. All these properties determine the nature and the healing effect of the gemstones. For example, gemstones of a primary origin, promote learning processes, and help unfold and develop innate abilities. Those of a secondary origin help harmonise inner longings with challenges of the immediate environment, while those of a tertiary origin promote self-recognition and give courage to accept or change what needs to be changed. Thus the geometric forms and colours are important when determining the healing effects of gemstones. These gemstones also called precious stones serve two major purposes apart from providing us with minerals; cosmically they act as mediators between two worlds. For example, huge amethyst geodes help our earth maintain its density level and health wise, they serve as carriers and fortifiers of energies that balance out imbalanced energies wherever they occur .For these purposes there are different qualities of gemstones which range from AA, A, B, C, to D, E and F.The E and F qualities are usually adulterated and should be avoided if the stones are intended for healing purposes. Today some stones similar in colour and chemical composition to gemstones are synthesized in laboratories and are called synthetic stones. These stones contain fewer blemishes than natural gemstones but they are very unsuitable for healing because they lack that unique property of natural gemstones which is the imbued energy. The best stones for healing purposes are natural, unadulterated gemstone of AA to C qualities, which are usually more difficult to find. How do they work'Like all other matter, precious stones have wavelengths and they radiate and vibrate at different frequencies. The frequencies of the vibration of precious stones are however similar to that of the vibration of the astral bodies of human beings which is the model on, which the physical body is formed. Hence the radiation of the gemstones can form a resonance with that of the astral body harmonising, enhancing and restoring its vibration when it is disharmonious. Since most diseases usually originate from the astral body except for wounds that arise from the physical body. Working with precious stones is very effective and has little or no side effects if employed appropriately. The radiations of the precious stones permeate the physical body through the energy centres of the body known as the chakras. The body has seven different major chakras that radiate the seven colours of the rainbow. The seven major chakras are:ChakraLocationColourRoot Genital area Red SpleenBelow navel Orange Solar Plexus DiaphragmYellow Heart Heart Green Thyroid Throat /thymus Blue Third eyeBrow IndigoCrown Top of the head Violet /purple Usually for a particular organ to be sick, all the seven chakras must be in disharmony with one major chakra being particularly affected. Thus to treat such a patient, gemstones needed to harmonise the particular major chakra affected is first applied and thereafter one or two other harmonising gemstones for the other chakras.Precious stones are not just used to heal diseases but can be used as a prophylactic in the form of birthstones to prevent possible ailments people are born with and to maintain emotional and psychic balance. Birthstones were put together after the discovery that many stones are only able to form under the influence of the radiation of a particular stellar constellation. Since every human being is usually born under the influence of a particular stellar constellation, precious stones and human beings influenced by the same stellar constellation were paired together.Experiments in this field in Chinese medicine showed that these pairings had positive effects on both stone and man. The birthstones reflect the strengths of the wearer and enhance them. It is recommended that people wear their birthstones especially if they haven't been able to fully develop their strengths. How to use gemstonesGemstones are used either by wearing with skin contact as a pierced, tumbled gemstone on a leather band or as a necklace or bracelet, by plastering on affected organ with leukosilk tape, by preparing the water and drinking for certain stones that are not porous, or by using the gemstone essences or powder in serious cases or by placing huge geodes in one's environment. For friable or toxic gemstones like Turquoise, Cinnabar & Nickeline, an indirect method of water preparation to be described in future can be used. In subsequent articles I will write on specific ailing states, their causes and gemstones that can bring alleviation.Care of gemstonesGemstones used with skin contact should be cared for regularly to maintain their healing effects. This should be done once a month by rinsing under tap water, drying them with a soft cloth and placing them overnight in an Amethyst Geode or on a flat Amethyst Crystal piece. However, certain gemstones like Quartz, Amethyst, Raw Diamond and Pyrite Sun don't need to be purified; they do it themselves.I hope I have been able to give you an unbiased insight into the nature and workings of these treasures. See you next Thursday for more detailed information.HealthGardens@aol.com
