Beach Eagles crash out of Dubai Inter-Continental Cup

Published by Tribune on Fri, 25 Nov 2011

NIGERIA'S Beach Eagles yesterday defeated Tahiti 1-0 in their last group match of the 2011 Dubai Beach Soccer Inter Continental Cup, but the victory was not good enough to see them through to the semi-final of the competition. The Adamu Audu-piloted side had on Tuesday lost 1-8 to the reigning world champions, Russia with Victor Tale scoring Nigeria's only goal. The Beach Eagles also lost the second game 2-3 to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) thus crashing out of the competition before yesterday's face saving victory over a Tahitian side.Coach Adamu had in a telephone chat with Tribunesports from Dubai acknowledged that his players did not get their acts together in the competition.'We did not play to our full potential against Russia. In fact, my players were even disturbed by the score line after the match. I had to psyche them up before our game against the host. We played better against UAE though we lost and winning the last game became our consolation because we can't go back home empty-handed and thank God we achieved that,' said the former BCC Lions goalkeeper.Meanwhile, group A winner, Russia which finished with nine points will today face Switzerland in the first semi-final of the competition while unbeaten Brazil confronts the United Arab Emirates in the second semi-final .The final of the competition scheduled for tomorrow will be preceded by the third place game.
