Robbers on the rampage in Ogun '10 killed

EXACTLY two weeks after bandits invaded the permanent site of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, another robbery incident, which claimed no fewer than 10 lives, was recorded in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Thursday.The robbery incident, which happened around 11.00 a.m. lasted for over 30 minutes uninterrupted, as four commercial banks located in the business centre of the town were raided.The hoodlums, numbering about 20, were reported to have stormed the premises of four new generation banks, shooting sporadically to scare people away from the scene.An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the robbers used explosives and other dangerous weapons to break into the banks, carting away undisclosed amount of money.The entire community was thrown into confusion, as banks in the neighbouring towns closed down for the day while shop owners also closed their shops for fear of being attacked.Two motorcycle riders, a woman and a man were among the victims of the robbery incident.The commander of the state vigilance group in Sagamu, Musibau Araokanmi, was said to have sustained injuries and was taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, (OOUTH) for treatment.A car wash attendant, Muyiwa Ogunade, also sustained gunshot injuries in the head and has since been admitted at a private hospital in the town.Men and officers of the Nigeria Police were seen at the scene of the incident, when the Nigerian Tribune got there.Attempts to speak with officials of the affected banks were unsuccessful, as none of them was willing to speak with newsmen.A Toyota pick-up van with registration number LAGOS EH 287 LSD was riddled with bullets, but the owner was said to have escaped death.The robbers, it was further learnt, escaped through Ago-Iwoye- Ilishan road.When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, told the Nigerian Tribune that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Nicholas Nkedeme, was on his way to the scene of the incident but could not confirm the number of casualties.He added: 'At about 11.20am, some armed men, up to 25, attacked two banks in Sagamu, with heave artillery, blew the security door with dynamite as a result, a member of the vigilance group, on distress call, was hit by a stray bullet and later died. And the man on bike, watching the scenario, too, lost his life.'The CP and other senior officers visited the scene. Forensic investigation in progress.
