Ado residents send SOS to Ekiti govt on refuse

Some residents of Ado-Ekiti whose buildings are located along the Ekiti State University road have raised the alarm over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area by unknown persons.One of the residents, Malam Kabiru Daudu, said if the situation was not immediately checked, it might jeopardise the ongoing free health programme initiated by Gov Kayode Fayemi to better the lot of the people.Daudu urged the state government to ensure the evacuation of the refuse on time to avert outbreak of communicable diseases in the area.'What we are talking about here is not just ordinary refuse. The waste also contains human feaces, dead animals and perishables.'All these put together usually emit frightening odour upon decomposition, and there is hardly anything we can do to arrest the situation unless the government is kind enough to look into it.'When contacted, the Chairman of the State Waste Management Board, Chief Adabayo Morakinyo, condemned the act and promised to address the situation.He said the intention of the state government was to create an environment free of filth and not to add to problems of the people.The chairman warned affected residents and the generality of Ekiti people to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorised places to avoid the wrath of the law.According to him, anyone caught after these warnings will be apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law as provided for in the state's environmental sanitation laws.Morakinyo said that Environmental Health Officers of the board had been mandated to monitor the movement refuse in the affected area with a view to bringing those responsible for the act to book.The board chairman, who restated the commitment of the state government to ensure a clean environment and advised landlords to build toilets in their houses.He also urged them to make sure that tenants used dustbins provided by government in strategic locations at no cost.
