We're living in danger ''Jakande Estate resident

Published by Tribune on Fri, 25 Nov 2011

RESIDENTS of Akanni Crescent, Jakande Estate Ajangbadi, Lagos State, have called on the state government to save them from the swamp which had been bedevilling the area for 10 years.Speaking with the News agency of Nigeria (NAN), some residents of the area said that the situation was becoming uncontrollable.Mr Alabi Iyanda, who spoke on behalf of residents, said many of the residents had lived in the area for more than 20 years, noting that the swamp became worse 10 years ago.'Sometime in 2009, a little boy mistakenly fell into the swamp and all efforts to rescue him failed. We have lived with the swamp without hope for tomorrow,'' Iyanda said.He said it was disheartening to note that people could live in such an area for 10 years and nothing was done to alleviate their situation in spite of constant appeals to the authorities concerned.Iyanda called on the government to help the people in the area as the situation had become unbearable, adding that there was need for a good drainage system in the area to allow for free passage of water.Another resident, Mrs Adebisi Ola, described the situation as ``terrible,'' noting that during the rainy season, the swamp usually overflew into various homes ``thereby destroying property and rendering the people temporarily homeless.''She also called on the government to do something urgently, pointing out that the environment had not only become uninhabitable but had also constituted a health hazard to residents of the area.
