PDP berates Fashola over introduction of toll gates

Published by Tribune on Sat, 26 Nov 2011

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),Lagos State, on Thursday, berated Governor Babatunde Fashola over the introduction of toll gates on Lagos roads, describing it as an exploitative order. The party, in a statement signed by its publicity secretary, Taofik Gani, said the statement credited to the governor was a confirmation that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was a party with no credibility, asking why Governor Fashola waited till after all the elections before unleashing the hardship on Lagosians. It accused the governor of putting the selfish interests of his friends and cronies over that of 15 million people of Lagos State, accusing the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, of complicity in the matter.Appealing to the governor to rescind his decision, the PDP stated, 'we advise the governor to immediately reverse the offensive order to introduce toll gates on Lagos roads, especially in areas where there are no alternative routes.'Lagosians cannot bear the brunt as they are currently paying the highest taxes in the whole 36 states of the federation.' Indeed, the transporter who pays the fees will transfer the burden to the poor commuter.'Eventually, resistance and fighting may arise between transporters and commuters.'' A similar deceit is the present Tenancy Law compelling landlords and tenants to do 'financial sacrifices' which even the government cannot afford.
