Hugh Masekela, others to perform at Lagos Jazz Festival

THE second edition of the Lagos Jazz Series began last Thursday, November 24, at the Four-Point Sheraton, Victoria Island, Lagos, with a series of performances by jazz music exponents, which sent the teeming audiences into a frenzy.The four-day festival, which will be staged across four open air venues in West Africa's most populous city, Lagos, ends on Sunday and will feature renowned jazz artists from across the globe, who will play for select audiences in what has been dubbed a most important event for lovers of fine music and the good life. Also featuring are up-and-coming artistes who are also making waves with their talents as jazz musicians. Among them is the South African trumpeter, flugehornist, cornetist, composer, and singer Hugh Ramopolo Masekela. Initiator of the project, Oti Bazunu, said the festival was to treat Lagosians and visitors from all over Africa to a series of exciting live and outdoor Jazz performances in the garden, at the park, and on the Lagos waterfront. While drawing from the success of the first edition, and given the sustained requests for a repeat of the feat, organisers of the significant event announced that this year's edition will feature foremost music maestro and jazz super star on the African continent, Hugh Masekela, who has worked with a number of music greats, including Bob Marley and Miriam Makeba, among others. Other musicians, who will feature at musical event include Cobhams Asuquo, the internationally respected singer-songwriter and guitarist, Keziah Jones, the delectable Tiwa Savage, as well as pop-soul Jazz singer Bez, whose closing performance last year was described as 'shattering'. Others are the United Kingdom (UK) singer, Brigitte Sesu, upright bassist Morrie Louden, who is also making a second appearance and Rwandan-Ugandan singer, Somi. After a successful opening yesterday with the screening of the film, On the Roof, at Four Points Sheraton, Lekki, it was time for an engaging jazz experience with Jazz by the Pool at The Moorhouse, Ikoyi. Today, at the Boat Club, Ikoyi, it will be time for Jazz by the Lagoon. The event ends tomorrow at Muri Okunola Park with a special jazz music performances tagged 'Jazz at the Park' Earlier, Bazunu informed that the Lagos Jazz series, an eclectic mix of great musicians, is a singular experience. ''We're inviting some of our favourite Jazz musicians from all over the world to come and play for us, in intimate and exciting venues. Since they're coming, we might as well put on a bit of a show and invite all our favourite people to attend' The show is coming together and it's going to be wonderful,' he said.
