Guinness donates waterworks

Guinness Nigeria Plc on Friday handed over a mini waterworks it built to the people of Ise-Ekiti in Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.The water project, which was inaugurated by Governor Kayode Fayemi in Ise-Ekiti on Friday, consisted of boreholes, overhead storage tanks, water treatment plant, reticulation network and a standby power source.The mini waterworks, according to the Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Devlin Hainsworth, is one of the ways of fulfilling the companys social responsibilities.The managing director, who was represented by the Head, Sustainability and Responsibility, Guinness Nigeria, Mrs. Adrianne Nwagwu, said with the mini waterworks at Ise-Ekiti, the company had sponsored water projects in 14 states in its Water of Life project.Hainsworth said, "The Water of Life project is part of the companys contribution to resolving the global concern of accessibility to clean drinking water in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to halve the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 2015."'''''''"Guinness Nigeria has completed water projects in over 13 states of the federation, serving over a million people in households across the nation. They are located in Abia, Rivers, Lagos, Ogun, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Edo, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Anambra States.This is our own way of enriching the economic and social lives of people in local communities."The monarch of the town, Oba Adetunji Ajayi, expressed gratitude to the company. He said the people of his town had been suffering hardship for many years in search of water, especially in the dry season.The monarch said that with the 15 fetching points which covers about four kilometers radius, the suffering of his people regarding water had come to an end.He promised that the people of the town would secure the project and ensure its adequate maintenance.He said that the local government had provided a 30 KVA generator to power the waterworks anytime there was power outage.The governor also said the gesture from the company would go a long way to reduce some of the diseases caused by unclean water.According to Fayemi, " We thank Guinness Nigeria Plc, a subsidiary of Diageo particularly for this wonderful gift to our people. This type of project will go a long way in fighting diseases such as typhoid, diarrhoea and other water borne diseases."
