Why we campaigned for Jonathan -Defence Minister

Published by Tribune on Mon, 28 Nov 2011

THE Minister ofDefence, Dr BelloHaliru Mohammed, at the weekend, gave an insight as to why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under his leadership supported the bid of President Goodluck Jona-than to contest during the last general election.Dr Mohammed, who spoke at the weekend in Abuja, while receiving a distinguished award from a team of members of the National Association of Niger Delta Students (NANDS), led by the national president, Lucky Emonefe, noted that his team at the party hierarchy was convinced and believed that President Jonathan was, indeed, qualified and competent to lead the nation at this time.According to the minister, 'yes, we have a political party that is alive, responsive and responsible to the genuine yearnings and aspirations of all Nigerians, including the minorities.'It is not only a policy, it is a covenant. This is why we followed Jonathan around the country because we believed he has the capacity to deliver as a leader of our party and leader of the government that our party has formed.Dr Mohammed said the team, therefore, took the president around the coun-try to sell his candidacy and the programmes of the PDP to all Nigerians, based on their belief and conviction that through his transfor-mation agenda, Nigeria would move to the next level.Earlier, Emonefe had said the association resolved, among other factors, to give the award to the minister, after reviewing his ante-cedents with Niger Delta students' leaders in the early 1970s when he was the president of Ahmadu Bello University Students' Union and also Vice-President of National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS).
