World Bank team lists delayed funding as bane of projects' execution

THE Road Sector Development Team (RSDT) in the Federal Ministry of Works has described the delay in releasingfunds by international finance bodies and theFederal Government's late release of counterpart funding as major challenges to project execution. The Acting Director and Unit Manager of the RSDT, a unit of the World Bank in the ministry, Mr. Ishaq Mohammed said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)on Thursday in Abuja. He said that if the World Bank and the African Development Bank could improve on their procurement processes, it would enhance the speedy completion of projects in the country. Mohammed alsosaid that if the government met its obligation in a timely manner, the team'soperations would be enhanced. He noted that road transportation played a crucial role in the economies of many nations as industrial and commercial activities depended on an efficient transport system. 'In Nigeria, huge sums of money have been spent on road development. These roads have been plagued by a number of problems, with the major ones being faulty designs, inadequate drainage system and poor maintenance culture, which have significantly reduced the utility of the roads,' Mohammed said.
