Japanese expert lists Nigeria's food processing potentials

A JAPANESE food expert, Mr. Norio Ichimaru, on Thursday said Nigerian food manufacturers, especially those producing spices, hadpotentials to export morewithimproved packaging.Ichimadu said this at an exhibition and seminar organised for exporters by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in conjunction with the Japanese External Trade Organisation (JETRO) in Apapa, Lagos.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seminar had thetheme: 'Market Access to Japan: Spices and Food Related Products'.According to Ichimadu, Nigerian food products are among the best and of the highest quality, assisted by the natural vegetation.'With what I have seen so far, Nigerian exporters can compete favourably with their world counterparts if they can have an attractive packaging systems and improved preservation,' he said.The food expert, after exhibiting some Nigerian spice products, identified cashew nut, ginger, hibiscus, sorghum flour, bitter kola asproducts that could breakinto the Japanese market easily.He said that some of these products, being imported from India and Thailand, were of high demand in Japan.Ichimadu said that Nigerian exporters would benefit greatly if they could meet up with the Japanese food specifications.
