LSPWC overhauls asphalt plant, set for operations

Published by Guardian on Mon, 28 Nov 2011

AHEAD of proposed maintenance activities on Lagos roads, the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has concluded the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) work on its asphalt plant, which started a few weeks ago, hereby making the plant ready for full-blown operation. The Corporation's management had recently said that the TAM is being carried out in the rainy season, since the use of asphalt for road maintenance is usually not suitable in wet season so as to avoid the devastating effect of water on the repaired portions as it may rain during or immediately after maintenance work is carried out.Speaking on the development recently, the Executive Chairman of the Corporation, Mr. Gbenga Akintola, said that with the completion of this exercise, the stage is now set for the organisation to commence massive maintenance work on Lagos roads.According to him, the use of asphalt premix without experiencing any technical hitches or delays, which often occur prior to the TAM, can now commence without fear of rain.He said the Corporation is rolling out the first output of the newly maintained plant and that he is planning to deploy over 160 tonnes of asphalt to about five locations where night operations will be carried out.'We can now take full advantage of our resumption to asphalt production in properly mixing the two methods of paving stones and asphalt premix in carrying out lasting repair work on Lagos roads,' he said, noting that despite that the Corporation is still mindful of predicted elongated rainy season in 2011, it is ready to take full advantage of dry days that might present clement weather, which may be ideal for its operation. The executive chairman noted however, that before the just concluded massive re-invigoration of the asphalt plant, the last time such a major maintenance work was carried out on the plant was June 2006.'Apart from replacement of all necessary components of the plants, it now wears an entirely new look consistent with the current brand presentation of the Corporation and can now steadily produce at full capacity of 300 tonnes per hour.
