Why some political parties can't rule Nigeria, by Lamido

Published by Guardian on Mon, 28 Nov 2011

GOVERNOR Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has said that some political parties cannot govern Nigeria because they were formed around single personality. The governor, who spoke yesterday at the national conference of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmen held at the Staff Development Centre Auditorium in Dutse, said he could not imagine such political parties like Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) or the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) leading the country. His words: 'I shudder whenever I imagine this country's future under the stewardship of political parties such as All Peoples Party (APP) in 1999 that later transformed to All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) or Alliance for Democracy (AD) that later became ACN or even CPC that was merely formed around one single personality.'Nigeria is too big to be governed by a party that flourishes from a single personality, a political party that was militarised by the same personality, who from 1983 to 1985, saw nothing good about politics and politicians'.Lamido urged PDP to continue to defend its members from what he described as aggression and castigations of those smaller political parties that lack the wherewithal to form any coherent platform for the formation of any government.According to him, the PDP rescued Nigeria from the brink of disintegration and fought for the country's stable democracy when in 1998, some groups of patriotic Nigerians brainstormed to seek for the lasting alternative to the continued military rule in the country. He berated some leaders of the CPC for allegedly betraying their former boss, Gen. Sani Abacha, by not rallying around his son during the last elections. 'They could not show some affection to the late General's son, Mohammed Abacha, but instead, betrayed him in the process by refusing him the opportunity to contest elections in Kano', he said.Earlier, Secretary of the National Conference of PDP Chairmen and also the PDP Chairman of Ekiti State, Bola Olu Ojo, said they were in the state for the second time to meet and deliberate on pressing issues such as the blatant disregard for rule of law in the removal of elected politicians by some state governors.
